So you’ve applied for a job and have been asked to do a video interview, what next?
Video technology is changing the world of recruitment. Conducting face-to-face interviews via video platforms makes viewing candidates a seamless and time-efficient process.
With more people working remotely due to the COVID-19 outbreak, video interviews break down location and travel barriers and ensure that the hiring process can continue to operate as normal as possible.
If you’re in the midst of your job search and never had a video interview before, here are some useful tips to help you prepare:
Dress appropriately
It may be an odd concept of having a job interview while at home, but you need treat this exactly the same as a face-to-face one. To do this, make sure you dress smart and present yourself like you would at any other interview. Not only will you look professional, but it will boost your confidence too.
Check your surroundings
Try and find a neutral background, remove all distractions including your phone and ensure there are no loud background noises. Also, position your camera so it is solely focused on you and use as much natural light as possible. If you’re unsure, it may be a good idea to have a run-through with a friend or family member using a video platform to see what they think.
Test your technology and equipment
Before beginning your job interview, check your technology and internet connection. Ensure your microphone is working and your camera is positioned correctly. It’s a good idea to have a copy of your CV in front of you and notepad and pen in case you need to take any notes. While using technology during your interview, it’s important to highlight that issues may arise. Make sure you have your interviewer’s contact details to hand in case you need to notify them of any problems.
Speak clearly and remember body language
Ideally, use headphones with a microphone attached and speak as clear and concise as possible. Try and avoid looking at yourself on the screen throughout your interview and instead concentrate on looking at the camera to maintain a good eye contact with your interviewer. Also, remember your body language! It is easy to forget about how you are being portrayed on camera but try and express yourself like you would when meeting someone in person.
Be yourself and relax
The most important thing is to be yourself and relax. You need to bring your CV to life as much as possible and let your personality shine through just like you would during any other interview. If you’re not used to sitting and talking in front of a camera, it may be worth practicing beforehand.
