Meet the Team: Saffron O’ Donoghue, Recruitment Consultant

Welcome to another instalment of our Meet the Team blog series. These Q and As are a great opportunity for you to get to know our consultants and find out a bit more about what they do at Devonshire.   

This time, we sat down with Saffron O’ Donoghue, who recently joined the Irish division of the Devonshire team at the start of 2022 as a Recruitment Consultant. 


Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you at Devonshire? 

As a Recruitment Consultant for Devonshire’s Irish market, my time is spent working with both clients and candidates in the end-to-end recruitment process. This involves working closely with clients to understand their recruitment needs, sourcing the right candidates for them, scheduling interviews and engaging with them on feedback in terms of both the recruitment strategy and individual candidate reviews.

On the candidate side, my role involves working to match candidates to the right career move for them, conducting interviews, supporting candidates with next-stage interview prep and providing them with feedback once the process is complete. 

Prior to joining Devonshire, I spent a couple of years building and managing operations teams in the tech start-up world. I decided it was time for a change – and not really knowing what that change looked like – I reflected on what elements of my career to date I would love to do more of (or never do again!).

This is ultimately what led me to joining Devonshire. Of all that is involved in people management, I was always most passionate about coaching teams to reach their full potential in their careers, wherever that may be, so I decided to throw myself into a full-time recruitment role where I get to speak to tonnes of people every day about theirs! 


What are the types of roles you recruit for… 

We work across the four verticals that Devonshire focuses on – Creative, Commercial, Technical, and Contingent but as we are still in start-up mode in Ireland, each consultant is working on quite varied roles right now. As the team grows over the next year (watch this space!), we will individually become more niche but for the moment I am enjoying getting a feel for the labour market in Ireland as a whole.

In your opinion, what makes a candidate stand out from the crowd? 

A candidate who shows passion for the role and company they are applying with and can articulate why it aligns with their own career goals and experience will stand out to the recruiter and lead to the hiring manager being more invested in that candidate.

Energy is contagious, and many companies prioritise a candidate’s culture fit – if you can leave those on your interview panel with positive energy, a strong sense of who you are as an employee and why you connect with this company’s mission and values, it could go a long way to making a lasting impression. 


What advice would you give to people wanting to get into your sector or progress in the career ladder? 

Whether you are looking to progress in your career or looking to change paths completely, in my opinion the most important things you can do to set you up for long term career success is to continuously challenge yourself. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you need to find a new room, if you can do your job “with your eyes closed” – it’s time to try something new (even within your same role).

Actively and regularly seek feedback; make your continuous development your responsibility, do not wait for your annual performance review or for others to reach out.

Also, take ownership; put your hand up to take on the difficult tasks that everyone else is avoiding for that very reason, it will stand you good stead in the long run. 


How have your first few months been at Devonshire? 

Amazing! With switching career paths to move into recruitment, I didn’t really know what to expect day-to-day. I had a general idea of what being a full-time recruiter would be like, but you never know how it will work out until you’re in it and I can honestly say it’s been everything I hoped. I’ve had the opportunity to jump right in – so every day is a school day! 

The Devonshire team are all highly experienced so there is no shortage of support, there is a great atmosphere, and it is so exciting to be a part of Devonshire’s growth in the Irish market. 


Describe yourself in three words… 

Honest, focused and dog-obsessed (…see next answer) 


What do you get up to outside of work? 

Outside of work, I am a full-time ‘pawrent’ to two very boisterous, troublemaking, escape artists; Uno who is an almost (yes, almost) one-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog and Oscar who is a six-month-old Golden Retriever. Why doesn’t anybody tell you once you get a dog, you will never be able to sleep in again? I recently bought a house, so when I’m not stopping Uno and Oscar from causing havoc, the rest of my time is spent painting, painting, fighting renovation dust and more painting… 


Finally, what’s your favourite motto/quote? 

“It always seems impossible until it’s done” – Nelson Mandela.
